Collection includes correspondence, papers, notebooks, notes, calculations, and reports. Topics include astronomy, election of the Lowndean Professor of Astronomy and Geometry at Cambridge, 1913, including applicatons from A. N. Whitehead, H. F. Baker, and R. A Herman; solar eclipses, 1896-1905; spectra; and solar research. Also papers by G. E. Hale and by J. Evershed. Materials from an envelope marked "Eclipse Spectrum" include letters from W. H. Walmsley and H. F. Newall, and a paper by Grove-Hills on the eclipse of January, 1898. Also, papers related to Grove Hills' visit to the fourth conference of the International Union for Co-operation in Solar Research at Mount Wilson, 1910. Prominent among the correspondents, 1910-1915 are: F. W. Dyson, A. S. Eddington, E. B. Knobel, H. F. Newall, H. H. Turner, and M. Wolf.

George Ellery Hale was an astrophysicist. He was the organizer and director of the Mount Wilson Observatory of the Carnegie Institute of Washington, 1904-1923, and was honorary director until his death in 1938.
